New Limited Service Clinics included in
Tufts Health Plan Provider Network
Members will be covered at MinuteClinic locations in Massachusetts to receive treatment for a number of common, non-emergency ailments.
Effective August 1, 2008, Tufts Health Plan has contracted with MinuteClinic Diagnostics of Massachusetts (MinuteClinic), a subsidiary of CVS Caremark, to add walk-in, limited-service clinics to the Tufts Health Plan network. This contract is contingent on MinuteClinic obtaining a license from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health ("DPH"), and then only with respect to sites approved by the DPH.
Clinics are expected to open at CVS/Pharmacy stores in late August/early September, with new locations to be added throughout 2008 and beyond.
This option is a cost-effective alternative to emergency room care, when less urgent care is needed, for a variety of common family illnesses. It also offers the convenience of weekend and evening hours.
Which plans offer this coverage?
Coverage for MinuteClinic visits will apply to most members of all commercial plans:
- HMO/EPO
- POS
- PPO, including plans utilizing the PHCS network
- Navigator
- Select Network Plans
- CareLink - CIGNA HealthCare also currently has a contract with MinuteClinic.
- Commonwealth Choice (Connector) Plans
Excluded Products
At this time, Tufts Medicare Complement (TMC), Medicare Complement Plan (MCP), and Tufts Health Plan Medicare Preferred products are excluded, because MinuteClinic does not have CMS certification.
How does coverage work?
Members can visit any MinuteClinic located in Massachusetts. MinuteClinic does not accept appointments, and PCP referrals are not needed. Members will pay the same copayment for a MinuteClinic visit as they would for a visit to the Primary Care Physician (PCP). Members must present their Tufts Health Plan ID card at the visit.
The addition of MinuteClinic to our provider network does not change the role and importance of primary care physicians. While it provides an additional, albeit limited, treatment option to members who may be unable to visit their PCP due to scheduling or logistical challenges, Tufts Health Plan encourages all members to seek care and be directed for additional care from their PCP.
We anticipate that use of MinuteClinic will reduce weekend and after-hours ER visits, and relieve stresses on the current medical system and increase patient access to appropriate providers.
Which conditions does MinuteClinic treat?
Practitioners at MinuteClinics can diagnose and treat a variety of common illnesses, such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, bladder, and bronchial infections. A list of services is available at
www.minuteclinic.com.
Practitioners at MinuteClinics diagnose, treat, and write prescriptions (when clinically appropriate) for a variety of common family illnesses to patients 24 months and older. Prescriptions written by a MinuteClinic practitioner can be filled at any Tufts Health Plan network pharmacy.
MinuteClinics do not provide emergency care, treatment for injuries, or wound care. A person requiring X-rays or stitches, or in any life-threatening situation, is not an appropriate patient for MinuteClinic. Members experiencing these conditions should go to an emergency room.
MinuteClinics are not affiliated with any hospitals, although medical directors may have admitting privileges.
MinuteClinic Practitioners
Board-certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants who specialize in family health care staff the MinuteClinics, and local board-certified physicians serve as medical directors. MinuteClinic medical directors perform regular chart reviews and are available for consultation during all hours of operation.
Medical Records
All medical records are electronic. Members receive a hard copy of their record at the end of the visit. To promote coordination of care, with the member's consent, a copy will be provided to his or her PCP.
